CITY, N.D. — A man who allegedly fired gunshots into two Valley City businesses died after crashing his pickup near Bald Hill Dam northwest of Valley City Tuesday evening.

Authorities say 21-year-old Matt Schaefer of Valley City crashed his vehicle into a power pole near Bald Hill Dam after fleeing the city moments after the shooting. No one was hurt.

According the owners of the Brothers III convenience store, a man using a high powered rifle fired one shot into the Dakota Silver liquor store and another 3 to 4 rounds into the side of the convenience store while sitting in his pickup in the street around 5:30 p.m., Tuesday.

Store co-owners Jim and Ron Peterson say it sounded like firecrackers going off inside the store and then a customer inside said someone is shooting at us.

Valley City police Detective Mark McDonald says no one was injured or hit by bullet fragments in the shooting on Tuesday.

Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin says the state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death on Thursday morning. He said he was told that the procedure would be done on Wednesday but late in the day he was told it would be held off until the next day.

McClaflin says Schaefer was found dead inside his pickup along with a high powered rifle.
