City, N.D. — A Valley City man who fired gunshots into two businesses in the city died from a single gun shot wound before his pickup crashed into a power pole near Bald Hill Dam on Tuesday.

Authorities say 21-year-old Matt Schaefer drove his pickup out of the city moments after he shot one round into the Dakota Silver Liquor store and 4 rounds into the Brothers III convenience store.

Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin says the state medical examiner determined the cause of death as a single gunshot wound.

McClaflin says Schaefer was found dead inside his pickup along with a bolt action .223 caliber rifle.

Valley City police Detective Mark McDonald says workers inside the liquor store refused to sell liquor to Schaefer because of a prior incident on Sunday, there was no argument and a few minutes later the shooting started. He says no one was injured in the shooting on Tuesday.
