N.D.- The city of Oakes has been named  the 2011 North Dakota League of Cities City of the Year. The announcement came at the League’s annual conference Sept. 22-24 in Fargo.

Oakes was honored for achievements in a number of areas: Over 300 trees were planted along the railroad to help beautify a residential area. More than 40 blocks of water and sewer lines were replaced and a 30 percent grant was awarded for replacement of another 10 blocks in 2012.

In addition, the city worked with the North Dakota Department of Transportation to complete improvements on a state highway that runs through the community and also was awarded a Safe Routes to School grant from NDDOT. Work was started on an addition to the school gymnasium and renovations were initiated to increase space in a preschool facility for a growing number of students.

The community gathered in support of the National Guard unit as it prepared for deployment to Kuwait and Afghanistan. Area Eagle Scout projects included handicapped parking at the football field and a new batting cage at the baseball field.
The local economic development group created a new loan/grant program to encourage businesses to improve the exterior of their buildings. Main Avenue was renovated with decorative sidewalks, lighting and banners. Construction began on two new housing developments in town.

The City of the Year award recognizes cities for the quality, number, and extent of activities undertaken in the community. The North Dakota League of Cities provides services and gives voice to the collective concerns of the state’s 357 cities. The Leagues mission is  “Service, advocacy, leadership education and support.”
