City, N.D. – A manufacturing company is serious about building a million plant near the industrial park northwest of Valley City but two Minnesota cities are also in competition for the business.

Barnes County Valley City Economic Development Director Jennifer Feist would not disclose the name of the company during a city commission meeting. She says it could result in 60 to 75 new jobs.

She says the firm needs to be close to a rail line to ship in its raw material of forest products. The company has markets in the Dakota’s, Minnesota and Wyoming.

Valley Development Corporation president George Gaukler says due to competition, a good incentive must be presented to the prospective company.

The city commission approved the use of $300,000 of sales tax money set aside for economic development along with a 15 year Tax Increment financing mechanism to lure the company.

Feist says the Valley Development Corporation will be asked to approve the use of $150,000 of sales tax money set aside for economic development for this proposed project along with the 15 year Tax Increment financing incentive at a meeting next month.

The proposal still needs county approval. The city and county are not obligated to anything if the business selects another city. The company should make a final decision by early February on whether or not to select Valley City.
