– Five local athletes have been honored with the Jamestown Optimist Club Athlete of the Week award for the week ending Dec. 17.

High School Girls: Erin Hillerud, 8th grade, Gymnastics: Erin placed in the top three on bars, vault, floor and the all-around at the Jamestown Invite on Dec. 16, helping Jamestown to a meet win. Her vault (8.775), floor (9.15) and all-around (34.6) scores were career bests.

High School Boys: Willy Marler, Senior, Swimming: Willy broke the school record in the 50 freestyle at the Bismarck Invite on Saturday.

High School Boys: Jaden Horsted, Senior, Wrestling: Jaden went into the Valley City Wrestling Tournament seeded number two, but when he left he was number one. Jaden won the tournament with two pins and a 6-2 decision in the finals.

Female College Athlete of the Week: Tiffany Sluick, Senior, Jimmie Women’s Wrestling
Hometown: Mason City, Iowa
Tiffany was the lone Jimmie in the Senior National Open Meet in Arlington, Texas on Saturday. Tiffany recorded a 3-2 record in the elite competition for spots in the Olympic Trials. Tiffany defeated the No. 3-ranked wrestler and her only losses were to the No. 2 ranked wrestler and the cadet World Champion in a close match. Tiffany missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials by one round.

Male College Athlete of the Week: B.J. Mertens, Senior, Jimmie Men’s Basketball Team
Hometown: Devils Lake, North Dakota
B.J. scorched the nets with four 3-point baskets on his way to 14 points in leading the Jimmies over Southeastern College in Florida on Saturday. The Jimmies won a 62-58 decision over the No. 15-rated Southeastern team.
