Solveig Shanenko, 81, of Valley City, ND passed away on Jan. 2, 2012 at Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.  Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday Jan 7th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. Dan Forsberg officiating.  Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Friday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.  Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery later in the spring.

Irene was born to Gilbert and Olga Friestad on a farm near Valley City.  She attended Noltimier School and graduated in 1948.  On Sept. 18, 1949 she married  Orlo Shanenko and they farmed together until 1987, when they moved into Valley City.

Irene was active in her church, the Getchell Homemakers, was a 4-H leader for 18 years, and served on the North Dakota Winter Show Board-Women’s division for many years.   She enjoyed selling Tupperware, playing bingo and cards, gardening, doing ceramics and crafts, and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Irene is survived by her husband of 62 years, Orlo, four children, Julie (James) DiAngio, Bruce Jeanne) Shanenko, and Gregory (Darlene) Shanenko, all of Valley City, ND and Diane (Steve) Odegaard of Fargo, ND, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and four sisters, her twin sister Marit Zaun, Fran (Andrew) Aune, and Carrie Breske all of Valley City, ND and Hazel Swan of Jamestown, ND.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and infant daughter, Janice Lynette, and one brother.
