Overby was born November 2, 1915 in Cooperstown, N.D. to Peter A and Alma (Motland) Overby.  He moved with his family to Binford where he lived until age 7.  The family then moved back to Cooperstown where he lived and worked until he graduated from Cooperstown High School and continued working for the Albert Larson Department store.  He was drafted into the Army in the fall of 1941.  He served overseas in Ireland and in the invasion of North Africa for over four years.  Upon his discharge he went back to work at the Albert Larson Store as the manager of the grocery department and a junior partner in the business.

He married Evelyn Larson of Lake Park, Minnesota on June 29, 1947.  They had two daughters, Kathy and Sandy.  In the early years of their marriage they moved to Tolna, ND, Fargo, and back to Cooperstown continuing to work in the grocery business.  Upon returning to Cooperstown he bought the C and D grocery store later renamed to Overby’s Market.  He owned and operated the store until 1969 when they moved to Valley City, ND where he worked for the Valley City Grocery Company.  In 1999 he and his wife moved to Jamestown ND.

Einar was active in the Sons of Norway and in the Cooperstown Trinity Lutheran Church and Valley City Our Saviors Lutheran Church choirs. From a very early age Einar always enjoyed playing music and dancing and in his retirement years they square danced across North Dakota and in Arizona.  He sang with the Valley City Troubadours for years and inspired many people at the Jamestown Hospital Fitness Center with his regular exercise into his early 90’s.  At the age of 94 Einar moved to Eventide Hi Acres.  Einar was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the V.F.W. and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn and two daughters, Kathy (Don) Paulsen, San Diego, California and Sandy (Ron) Bendewald, Jamestown and four grandchildren, Todd Paulsen, San Francisco, California, Kristin Paulsen, San Diego, California, Carly Bendewald, Dallas, Texas, and Ross Bendewald, Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 20, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Interment: Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, ND.

Memorials: Jamestown Hospital Fitness Center, James River Transit, and Trinity Lutheran Church.
