Bertha Somsen, 86, Jamestown, ND, formerly of Kensal, ND, died peacefully at her home in Jamestown on January 23, 2012.
Rose Bertha Bata was born on the family farm on May 28, 1925 to Charley and Alvina (Pitra) Bata. She attended Bucephalia Country School and graduated from Kensal High School in 1945. Rose married David Somsen on September 17, 1946 at St. John’s parsonage in Kensal. To this union, three children were born, James, Judy and Joyce. They lived and farmed most of their married life north of Kensal and later moved into Kensal. They were married 64 years when David passed away December 28, 2010.
Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed when everyone was together sitting around the table.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her son, James (Ione) Somsen; two daughters, Judy Somsen and Joyce Carlson, all of Jamestown; six grandchildren, Ryan (Jessica) Somsen, Dazey, ND, Rick Somsen, Hannaford, ND, Ron (Joanie) Somsen, Kensal, Rory Somsen, Stanley, ND, Jaime (Chris) Hanshaw, Lincoln, CA and Jennifer (Tommy Mills) Carlson, Tallahassee, FL; seven great-grandchildren, Kalli, Drew, Hayden, Berkley Somsen, Brennan Hanshaw, Mahrlin & Natayah Mills and one more on the way; four sisters, Frances Dahl, Cooperstown, ND, Helen Schlotman, Carrington, ND, JoAnn (Obert) Somsen, Jamestown and Maxine Baker, California; one brother, Charles (Jane) Bata, Kensal, one sister-in-law, Dorothy Somsen, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one brother, Gerhard; and two sisters, Val Bata and Arlene Page.

Visitation:
9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Friday, January 27, 2012 at the Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, ND.
Vigil: 7:00 PM, Friday, January 27, 2012 at the church.

Service:
10:30 AM, Saturday, January 28, 2012 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Kensal, ND with Father Steven Meyer, celebrant and Father Joe Barrett, con-celebrant.

Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, ND
