(Optimist Club) – The Jamestown Optimist Club has awards its Athlete of the Week Awards for the week ending Jan. 28.

High School Girls: Kayla Thoele, Blue Jay Basketball; Mercedes Westereng, Senior, Blue Jay Gymnastics
Kayla helped the Blue Jay girls get a split this week losing to Mandan on Thursday and beating Bismarck High on Saturday. Kayla shot 60 percent from the field and 100 percent from behind the arc. She averaged 7.5 rebounds a game along with 18.5 points per game
Mercedes won three events on Saturday: beam, floor, and all-around. She was second on bars and vault. Her bars score of 9.15 was a season high and her all-around score of 37.1 was a career best.

High School Boys: Braydon Love, Sophomore, Blue Jay Swimming and Diving
Love scored points in all of his events on Saturday at the Blue Jay Invite. He has also qualified for the state swim meet in 6 of the 9 individual events offered.

Female College Athlete of the Week: Ashley Cooper, Senior, Jimmie Women’s Track and Field Team
Ashley placed 3rd in the 55 hurdles in a season best 9.44, placed 5th in the 55 dash in 8.12, and ran the fastest leg on the winning Jimmie 4 x 400 meter relay team at the Northern Triangular in Aberdeen on Saturday.

Male College Athlete of the Week: Trent Roemmich, Sophomore, Jimmie Men’s Track & Field Team
Hometown: Linton, North Dakota
Trent won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.94 – just missing the NAIA indoor qualifying standard and also ran a strong leg on the second place 4 x 400 meter relay team at the Northern Triangular on Saturday in Aberdeen.
