CITY (NewsDakota.com)–A defensive surge in the second half led the Grand Forks Central Knights to a 64-53 win over the Valley City Hi-Liners Friday night in Valley City.

The Hi-Liners struggled to find offensive options outside of Chase Carpenter, who scored 18 points in the opening half. But Central devoted multiple defenders to Carpenter in the second half, limiting him to a single field goal and 21 total points for the night.

Valley City struggled to handle the ball, with multiple turnovers in a stretch that saw the Knights roll from a three-point deficit to a 12-point lead. Sean Norton led the Knights with 18 second-half points during the key run, leading all scorers with 24. David Olson scored 20 in the Knight victory.

The loss drops the Hi-Liners to 0-9 in Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) play, with Friday’s game worth two EDC points, handing Valley City a pair of losses. The Hi-Liners face Fargo Davies in Fargo Saturday.

Central also topped the Hi-Liner girls in Grand Forks 65-47. No individual numbers were available at the time of this report.

The girls game was also worth two EDC points, and the loss drops the Hi-Liners to 3-5 in EDC play. They also travel to Fargo Davies Saturday.
