JAMESTOWN (NewsDakota.com) – Zane Braun took home a state championship and the Jamestown High School wrestling team took 10th place this weekend at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament in Bismarck.
The Blue Jays had 10 wrestlers compete at state, and racked up 86.5 team points, narrowly edging Fargo Davies (86) for 10th. West Fargo won the team title with 223 points, followed by Bismarck and Bismarck Century. A total of 18 teams competed.
Braun, a junior who entered the tournament seeded No. 5 at 152 pounds, was the star of the tournament for the Blue Jays. He put together a perfect 4-0 record to win an individual state championship. He won his first two matches by pin, and then defeated the No. 1-ranked wrestler by a 17-2 technical fall in the semifinals. In the championship match Saturday, Braun had an 8-2 lead before No. 2 Bryce Fish of Grand Forks Central withdrew because of a head injury.
Other Jamestown results
Paxton Mewes, the No. 8 seed, took sixth place at 106 pounds, posting a 3-3 record.
Jaden Horsted, seeded No. 4 at 120 pounds, went on to take third place after posting a 4-1 record.
Mitch Ova went 1-2 at 132 pounds and did not place.
Ryan Hillerud, seeded No. 8 at 138 pounds, went 2-3 and placed eighth.
Eathan Gumke, seeded No. 4 at 170 pounds, took fourth place after posting a 3-2 record at state.
Reece Waldie went 1-2 and did not place at 182 pounds.
Pat Lane went 0-2 and did not place at 195 pounds.
Nate Purcell went 1-2 and did not place at 220 pounds.
Mark Reynolds went 1-2 and did not place at 285 pounds.
