E. Betting, age 90, of Milnor, ND, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Marvin Erling Betting, son of Elmer and Emma (Danielson) Betting was born January 28, 1922 at Milnor, North Dakota. Marvin lost his mother at the age of three, and then went to live with local relatives through his early childhood. When he was eight, he came to live with his Aunt Mary and Uncle Clarence Johnson and became a loved member of their family. He attended Sydna School before attending Milnor High School through the 11th grade. At the age of twelve, Marvin began hiring his labor out to neighboring farmers. In the late 1930s, he joined the WPA and worked on Storm Lake; creating a sandy beach on the Northeast end of the lake. He later joined the C.C.C. and helped install telephone lines through Mt. Rushmore National Park.

In 1941 Marvin married Marvel Albin, and together they raised two daughters, Dolly and Donna. Marvin joined the U.S. Army in 1944, serving his country in Hawaii until 1946. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Award. After his discharge, they farmed in the Milnor and Fullerton areas. In 1957 Marvin moved his family to Portland Oregon, where he worked as a maintenance engineer, retiring in 1982.

Marvin and Marvel returned to Milnor in 1991, and have lived there ever since. Marvin enjoyed helping his neighbors, and in 2000 he was honored to receive the Galaxy Award from the Milnor Satellite Club. Marvin was a life long member of St. Arnold’s Catholic Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, married, and received first communion. He was also a member of the VFW and American Legion, and was active in the Milnor Senior Center.

Fixing broken items was one of his favorite passions. His garage became a great visiting spot for his many friends around town. He also loved playing cards and was never too busy for a game of pinochle.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Marvel (Albin) Betting; daughters, Delilah Cooper of Estacada, OR, and MaDonna Lane of Tillamook, OR; six grandchildren, Corey Cooper, Marci (Cooper) Marvel, Braden Cooper, Tim Lane, Traci (Lane) Slaaen, and Trevor Lane; six great-grandchildren all living in Oregon; a brother, Robert Betting; and cousin, Diane (Johnson) Foyt who was like a sister to him. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Clayton and Lester, two half-brothers, Curtis and Gene, his half-sister, Shirley and a cousin, Mavis.
