(NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Finance and Legal Committee on Tuesday approved entering into a joint powers agreement with Jamestown Public Schools to pay for a school resource officer at the High School.

Nick Hardy has been serving as school resource officer, but a grant that paid for 75 percent of his salary is expiring in June says city administrator Jeff Fuchs. The joint powers agreement calls for him to continue his work, with Jamestown Schools paying 75 percent of his salary and the city picking up the remaining 25 percent.

Hardy would continue his current role of being an officer at the school during the school year, and then working as an officer on the city streets during the summer months.

Since implementing a school resource officer, officials say there has been a reduction in police calls to the school, and also a reduction in referrals to juvenile court.

The agreement still must be approved by the City Council and the Jamestown School Board.
