Luverne Halvorson was born July 8, 1918 in Svea Township, near Litchville in Barnes County, ND.  She was the daughter of John and Jennie (Sarsten) Halvorson.  Harriet attended Svea School, graduating in 1935.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Valley City State University, Valley City, ND in 1954 and her Master’s Degree from the University of Wyoming at Laramie in 1966.           

Harriet’s teaching career spanned 40 years.  The first 20 were spent teaching English, the last 20 years, she was a Jr. High School Councilor.  She spent 8 years teaching in the North Dakota towns of Wheatland, Amenia, and Wishek.  She then taught 3 years in Helena, MT.  The last 29 years of her career were spent in Great Falls, MT.  She retired in 1982 and moved to Valley City.  Most recently, she was a resident of The Legacy Place.           

Harriet was a church organist for over 83 years.  She began playing at age 10.  Some of her pastimes included sewing and music.  After retiring, she learned to play ragtime music and took up rosemaling.  Traveling was also one of the things Harriet enjoyed to do.  She visited Norway on many occasions and also traveled to China and Korea.           

She was a member of Elim Evangelical Free Church.  For over 50 years, she belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma.  She was a National Member of the Montana Teachers Association.          

Harriet died on April 24, 2012 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.  She is survived by her brother, Richard (Milly) Hanson of Valley City, ND; sisters, Inez Gunkelman of Fargo, ND and Avis Bourland of San Diego, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.           

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, I.O. Hanson; an infant sister, Lois Maxine Hanson and a sister, Alice Nelson.           

A memorial service for Harriet will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Elim Evangelical Free Church, Valley City.  Burial will be in the Elim Cemetery, rural Valley City.           

Visitation will be in the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00.           

Memorials may be directed to Elim Cemetery fund.
