City, N.D. (Associated Press) A former Rapid City mayor who was arrested after allegedly being uncooperative with a police officer says the officer overreacted.

65-year-old Jim Shaw was pulled over Tuesday for speeding. Authorities say he ignored the officer’s commands, and the officer drew his gun. Shaw tells the Rapid City Journal that he doesn’t think the officer had any reason to pull his gun and that he was surprised and scared.

Police Chief Steve Allender says Shaw’s actions justified the officer drawing his weapon.

Shaw was mayor of Rapid City for a total of eight years between 1997 and 2007. He is accused of speeding, failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle and obstructing police, all misdemeanors. He has posted $300 bond and been released from jail.
