(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes Post 36 American Legion baseball team managed only four hits while giving up 11, and had six men stranded on base as opposed to Washburn Post 12’s 12 men.

But hits and runners left on don’t win ball games; runs win ball games, and Post 36 had one more than Post 12 to win their first game of the season Monday evening 3-2.

Simon Maddock threw all seven innings from Post 36, and allowed just the two runs on 11 hits, while striking out two. Maddock, along with Bryce Meehl and Wyatt Johnson scored the runs for Post 36, the first two in the first inning, and the winning third run in the fourth.

Game two was a little less kind to Post 36, as Post 12 took down Oakes 16-4. Oakes was up 3-0 after the first inning, and Washburn took charge starting in the third inning, chasing Chris Tyre out of the game after going two and two-thirds innings.

Post 36 has a tournament in Ellendale this weekend, and will next play a head-to-head contest on Monday June 18 as they host Enderlin. First pitch from Cummings Field in at 6 p.m., with coverage on KDDR-AM 1220 and NewsDakota.com starting at 5:45.
