COUNTY (NewsDakota.com) A stretch of northbound Interstate 29 in Trail County was closed Monday morning after a semi and trailer caught fire.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the semi had some sort of mechanical failure around 10 a.m. and caused the semi and trailer to catch fire. The semi and trailer burned to the ground on the right shoulder of Interstate 29 near Mile Marker 93, one mile north of Grandin, or 11 miles south of Hillsboro.

The fire was so large that it created a hazard, and reduced visibility; forcing the NDHP to closed the northbound lanes for a little under two hours.

The left lane going north on I-29 was reopened around 11:45 a.m., and the right lane is expected to reopen later this afternoon after crews clean up the debris from the fire.
