Ann Etter was born January 8, 1919, in Wimbledon, ND, the daughter of Fred and Anna Mae (Caroll) Etter.  She grew up on the family farm near Wimbledon and graduated from St. Catherine’s High School, Valley City in 1938.  Mary Ann lived in Chicago where she received her nurses training and was a nanny.  She returned to Wimbledon to work for the local doctor.  On February 14, 1941, Mary Ann married John Backer at St. Boniface in Wimbledon.  They settled on the Backer family farm until their retirement.  Mary Ann and John would spend their winters in Arizona and summers on the farm. John died in 1994.  Mary Ann moved to the Rock of Ages in 2003.

Mary Ann was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Courtenay, and St. Isador Circle.  She was a charter member and founder of Corinne Homemakers and a 4-H leader.

She enjoyed baking cakes, crocheting, playing cards, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.  Mary Ann will be remembered as a kind, wonderful person.

Mary Ann is survived by her son, John (Monica) Backer, Courtenay; daughter, Ruth Ann Loucks, Renton, WA; 5 grandchildren, Susan (Tyrone) Miller, Jill (Chad) Sorber, David (Brenda) Loucks, Daniel (Kim) Loucks, and Dean Loucks; 9 great-grandchildren, Tait Miller, Cade Miller, Opal Sorber, Madison Loucks, Shannon Skalada, Tara Skalada, Danyelle Loucks, Hannah Loucks, and Kyle Loucks; 4 great-great grandchildren; 1 brother, Willis (Donna) Etter, Hysham, MT; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; 2 grandsons, Wesley and Dale Loucks; and 1 sister, Mildred (Ray) Nelson.

Eucharist of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2012 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Wimbledon, ND.

Prayer Service: 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2012 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Wimbledon, ND.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown after a luncheon at the church.
