(NewsDakota.com)–Wahpeton, Grafton, Washburn, and LaMoure have advanced to the quarterfinals of the state Class “B” American Legion baseball tournament.

Wahpeton 1, Casselton 0

After the sectional tournaments were complete, and the draw pitted Wahpeton and Casselton against each other in the opening round, a pitching duel of Wahpeton’s Jeremy Bontjes and Casselton’s Ellery Bresnahan was expected by the fans.

The fans were not disappointed.

Bontjes held Casselton to four hits, while Bresnahan limited Wahpeton to just three.  In a game where mistakes were magnified, Bresnahan walked five, including  Bontjes to lead off the bottom of the sixth, who would score the winning run on Ethan Meide’s single for the games lone run.

Bresnahan struck out nine in six innings of work in the loss.  Bontjes fanned eight and walked just one in the complete-game win.

Grafton 4, Lisbon 3 (9 Innings)

In game two, the Section 2 representative Lisbon Post 7 struck first with a run in the top of the second. Grafton, the Section 6 Champion, was able to put up a three spot in the fourth on only two hits, with two errors in the inning charged to Lisbon starting pitcher Derek Lyons.

Lisbon scored two to tie in the seventh, thanks in part to a Hunter Mairs triple, but Zack Suda won it for Grafton in the eighth on a double that scored Austin Campbell, who started the inning with a lead-off triple.

Jamie Villarrell was the winning pitcher for Post 41, throwing 163 pitches, and striking out eight batters with seven hits allowed. Lyons took the loss for Lisbon, allowing just one earned run while striking out 12.

Washburn 10, Velva 4

In the day’s lone lopsided score, Washburn took advantage of a taxed Velva pitching staff, chasing starter Nathan Dean after hammering his breaking pitches for 2.1 innings, taking a 7-2 lead into the fourth.

Kirk Sailer made the lead stand up through five innings, despite some control problems, walking six and hitting a batter while striking out five.  Chance Kurle worked two innings of relief to close.  Mike Hausauer was 3-3 for Washburn at the plate, scoring twice.

LaMoure 3, Garrison 0

The fourth and final game on day one saw Post 19 score all three runs in the fourth inning on a couple hits, and three walks by Garrison’s Ramsey Crawford.

LaMoure’s Tanner Carlson was the winning pitcher for the host team and Section 2 Champs, throwing a shutout, and allowing just five hits and nine strikeouts. Crawford took the loss, all three runs on eight hits and four walks, along with five strikeouts.

Thursday will see Casselton face Velva in loser-out play at 12:00 p.m. to start the day.  Lisbon then faces Garrison in am elimination game.  The quarterfinals start at 5:00 p.m. with Wahpeton matching up with Washburn, then Grafton facing LaMoure finishing the day.
