(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School football team started off their 2012 season with a decent start as they defeated the Britton/Hecla South Dakota Braves 20-9 on Friday night at Cummings Field in Oakes.

Oakes trailed early 7-0 in the second quarter, but scored their first points of the year courtesy of a Cole Ehrlin 16 yard reception from Bryce Meehl. The extra point was blocked, but Oakes scored another two minutes later on an 18 yard run by Dalton Magill. Magill also ran in a two-point conversion and took a 14-7 lead into the half.

In half two, nobody was able to put points on the board in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Braves block a punt in the end zone for a safety, but Oakes responded with a 15 yard interception return for a touchdown with under a minute to go to seal the victory.

“All day, all the time, what we stress is turnovers.” said Oakes Head Coach Greg Dobitz. “We also stress ball security on our end, and were able to able both of those things tonight.”

Oakes is 1-0 and will start Class A Region I play against Linton-HMB next Friday at Cummings Field.
