CITY (NewsDakota.com) – A well-known pilot from Kindred has died after his airplane crashed Friday at the Barnes County Municipal Airport.

Sergeant Troy Hischer with the North Dakota Highway Patrol says 66-year-old Bob Odegaard died at the scene after his 1945 Super Corsair crashed at about 5:55 p.m. Odegaard was practicing his routine for the Wings & Wheels Airshow scheduled to be Saturday at the airport.

Hischer says witnesses say Odegaard was attempting a barrel roll prior to the crash. Odegaard’s son, who was also scheduled to perform Saturday, was the first person at the scene of the crash.

Dennis Helland, chairman of the Barnes County Airport Authority, says the airshow has been canceled, saying, “people that are scheduled to perform tomorrow, don’t want to fly.”

Helland says Odegaard was a legend in the flying community, and had mentored Tim McPherson, co-director of the airshow, for the past 35 years.

The Federal Aviation Administration arrived on the scene shortly after 8 p.m. Friday and is taking over the crash scene according to Hischer.

Odegaard was one of several performers Friday who were doing practice flights in advance of their scheduled performances Saturday in the airshow.
