N.D. (NewsDakota.com) North Dakota U.S. Senator-elect Heidi Heitkamp has been appointed to the Senate Agriculture Committee and the Committee on Indian Affairs, two appointments she pledged to seek during her campaign. She will also serve on the Banking, Small Business and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees.

Heitkamp, will be sworn in to succeed retiring Senator Kent Conrad on January 3. She said, “I’m pleased I’ll be able to work closely on issues that matter so much to the people of our state.”

Heitkamp said, “Farming has been the lifeblood of North Dakota’s economy since statehood, and it’s crucial for North Dakota to have a seat at the table when decisions on agriculture policy are made.”

Former Senator Byron Dorgan was chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee. Heitkamp said her appointment there fulfills a campaign promise to represent the interests of North Dakota’s tribes.
