N.D. (AP) – A 26-year-old North Dakota man has been sentenced to a year in prison for a rollover crash that killed a passenger.

The Forum reports that Keagan Haas, of Page, pleaded guilty in Cass County District Court to an amended charge of negligent homicide. Haas was originally charged with manslaughter.

The crash last year in Cass County killed 30-year-old Joshua Melvin, of Page. Authorities say Haas drank alcohol before getting behind the wheel. He also had prescription drugs in his system, but Assistant State’s Attorney Tristan Van de Streek says the drugs were administered at the accident scene.

Haas’ public defender, Pat O’Day, says both families were deeply affected by the crash and had questions about evidence in the case.
