FORKS (NewsDakota.com) – A 21-point halftime deficit was too much for the Valley City girls basketball team to overcome Tuesday night as they lost 72-64 at Grand Forks Red River.

The Hi-Liners trailed 37-16 at halftime following a rough first half, but rallied to within eight points with about 5 minutes remaining. They had one possession to cut it to a six-point lead, but could not convert and Red River quickly pushed the lead back to double digits and kept the Hi-Liners at bay the rest of the game.

Valley City head coach Jim McDaniel said the first half was obviously the difference in the game.

The Hi-Liners were led by 17 points from Clarissa Olson, 16 from Dierra Diegel and 12 from Jessica Denholm. Valley City drops to 10-4 overall and 5-5 in EDC play.

Grand Forks Red River improves to 7-5 overall and 7-5 in the EDC. Red River was led by 27 points from All-State guard Ellie Ripplinger and 21 from Nikki LaDouceur.
