CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State University club tennis team will be competing this week at the 2013 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship in Surprise, Ariz.

It is the first time ever that the Viking Club Team has qualified for the National Championships since the team was founded in 2004. The championship is set for April 11-13. The Vikings qualified for Nationals through section championship play earlier this season.

The team is led by co-captains Katie Paulson and Kurt Brown. Head coach Erik Kringlie says the Vikings have raised money to cover their travel expenses to Nationals by selling tennis team apparel, cookies at basketball games and Butterbraid pastries.

This year’s National Championship field includes 62 teams such as defending National Champion University of California-Berkeley and five-time national champion Texas A&M (which won titles in 2002 and 2004-2007).
