CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State men’s basketball team has added a highly-touted North Dakota guard to its roster.

Mac Kroeplin of Grand Forks Red River signed a Letter of Intent Monday to attend Valley City State and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2013.

Kroeplin, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game last year in leading Red River to a fifth-place finish at the Class A State Tournament. He also made 46 percent of the 3-point attempts last season. Kroeplin was named First Team All State, was a finalist for North Dakota’s Mr. Basketball award, and was a unanimous selection to the All EDC team.

“Mac will be a great addition to our program on and off the court,” said VCSU head coach Jeff Kaminsky. “His versatility on the perimeter and his strength will give him the opportunity to have an immediate impact. Mac had an outstanding high school career and we look forward to his transition to the college game as a member of Viking Basketball. ”

Red River won state in 2012 and was ranked No. 1 in 2012-13 for much of the season before finishing fifth.

“Mac is a winner and competitor at its finest,” said Red River head coach Jason Gregory. “He displays all of the characteristics of a great all-around basketball player.”

VCSU is coming off a 21-9 season and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, but graduated five seniors from that team.
