DAKOTA (NewsDakota.com) – To increase seat belt use, law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be conducting overtime enforcement of seat belt laws during a statewide Click It or Ticket campaign, running Friday, July 12, through Saturday, July 20, 2013. The campaign is funded by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).

Between construction crews, tourists, carpools and more, the roadways of North Dakota are well traveled in the summer months.  In July, there are over 616 million vehicle miles traveled, one of the highest vehicle traveling months of the year.  While those numbers are impressive, there is a more important number law enforcement would like to impress upon drivers: zero crash related deaths attributed to not wearing a seat belt.

“Zero is the ultimate goal of these increased enforcement periods,” says Mark Nelson, Safety Director. “It’s about reaching the point where law enforcement is issuing zero seat belt tickets because 100% of motorists understand that buckling up is the best way to protect themselves in case of a crash.”

In 2012, 92 fatalities in North Dakota were due to the fact that drivers and passengers were not wearing seat belts. “If you look at the facts, buckling your seat belt is the easiest way to protect the lives of your passengers and yourself in the event of a crash, leaving zero reasons not to buckle up every time,” concluded Nelson.
