Windfest in Kulm, North Dakota

Windfest 2012

KULM, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Windfest has always been a fun, family festival, something Kulm, ND has been proud to host for nine years. August 17, 2013 marks the celebration’s 10th anniversary, and the committee’s new president, Danielle Janssen, has had the same motto since she took office: bigger and better.

“We wanted the 10th to be really special; something that commemorates a decade of history and at the same time creates excitement about the future of Windfest,” says Janssen. “So, we decided to put every idea on the table, and we came up with some great ones.”

Altogether there are 11 new events at this year’s festival and a new band for the street dance Saturday night. But the committee has held on to past favorites as well, including the mechanical bull, sponsored by Kulm Area Recreational Promoters, airplane rides, and the 5K fun run.

Beyond new events and performers, the committee is looking to the future of Windfest. This year they invested in the future with small but crucial steps, like expanding their budget for design work and promotional materials and creating a donor recognition program.

In recent years, Windfest has had to dip into savings to cover the festival, so the committee took a new approach and offered sponsorships and promotional benefits to donors. This scope of donor recognition had not been attempted before, but the committee felt it was necessary in order to help make Windfest a more sustainable event into the future.

The response has been more than anyone on the committee expected. “We have been overwhelmed by the financial support of our community and area businesses. It is obvious that people want this event to succeed long into the future,” says Janssen.

The full schedule and contact details for events can be found on the Kulm Windfest Facebook page.
