CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City could be competing at the class “B” level in the fall of 2018 in high school sports if projected enrollment numbers come to fruition according to Activities Director Marty Bratrud.

Under the North Dakota High School Activities Association rule, school districts with an enrollment of 325 or higher in grades 9-12 are at the class “A” enrollment threshold. Valley City is projected to drop to 314 students by the fall of 2016.

Bratrud says under the NDHSAA rule the district could apply for class “B” status at that time and then compete at the class “B” level in the fall of 2018.

Bratrud says the projections from 2014-2023 are based on today’s actual enrollments figures from K-12 class size in the district. He says right now the high school has 340 students enrolled in grades 9-12.

Valley City Schools superintendent Dean Koppelman says in August of 2013 the district had 1,106 students enrolled in the fall as of December, 31 2013 the district had 1,083 students in grades K-12 a loss of 23 students. Koppelman says last year the district lost 25 students.
