CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Portable heaters ignited a fire that destroyed the Valley City home of John & Linda Schonert on January 28 according to Fire Chief Gary Retterath.

He says people have to be careful with portable heaters. He says don’t set them too close to clothing or other flammable fabrics.

Retterath says the mother and 2 children suffered injuries after they jumped out a 2nd story bedroom window. He says one fire fighter suffered smoke inhalation as he was turning off the natural gas connection in the back of the house.
