CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Officials with Canadian Pacific Railroad held an informational meeting with Barnes County and Valley City leaders to discuss rail car transportation safety.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the Casselton derailment and explosion brought an elevated height of concern for many people. He says Canadian Pacific Railway told area leaders that the company would cover mitigation costs if an accident occurred.

Meanwhile Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials told Werkhoven that oil rail cars rarely travel over the Hi Line Bridge as a precautionary measure.

A Canadian Pacific official met with Barnes County Fire & Rescue officials and civic leaders to address their concerns about a possible derailment with hazardous materials.
