N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – According to the Insurance Information Institute, frozen pipes are the second most common cause of home insurance claims in the U.S.

Water frozen inside inadequately insulated pipes can freeze and exert pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, stopping water flow, interrupting service to the home or pipes rupturing to cause costly damage. Tips from Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) recommend a few tips to prevent pipes from freezing.

For $1 per 6′ of insulation, foam can insulate pipes from the elements. Placing an insulating dome on outdoor faucets or spigots also reduce home pipes from freezing. Dripping your faucets will reduce the build-up of pressure in pipes. It is recommended that if you are going to leave your house or business unattended for an extended period to let the water drip to keep the water system unfrozen.
