N.D. (NewsDakota.com) At a ceremony in Jamestown Senator John Hoeven honored the military service of Korean War Veteran John Jangula and presented him with the military awards he earned while serving in the U.S. Army. Jangula was never presented his medals after the war.

Hoeven says, “like so many North Dakotans, John chose to join the National Guard and serve our state and nation,” he added “we appreciate his sacrifices serving in Korea and pay tribute to Sergeant Jangula with the medals he earned in the service of our nation.”

Jangula’s military honors are listed below:

·        National Defense Service Medal

·        Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars

·        Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award

·        United Nations Service Medal

Jangula joined the National Guard at age 17 and went to Camp Rucker, Alabama in 1951. In March 1952, Sergeant Jangula was deployed to Korea, where he served as a mortar transportation foreman. He was discharged December 4, 1952 at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Upon returning to North Dakota, John farmed and then worked as the maintenance man at the school in Edgeley until his retirement in 1981. He is the father of eight children. He and his wife, Grace, currently reside in Napoleon, North Dakota.
