CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Opening day of the season didn’t go so well for the Valley City baseball team as Oakes edged out the home team in a 3-0 win.

The two pitchers set the tone of the game early as Valley City’s Austin Berg and Oakes’ Bryce Meehl struck out the first three batters they faced. In fact, neither side would even get a hit until the midpoint of the game in the third inning. Valley City’s Garret Suhr was the first break up the no hitter on Meehl, when he drove the ball back up the middle of the field. However, Meehl would take care of the next two batters ending the inning with Suhr at second base.

The Tornadoes first scores came in the fourth inning when Cole Ehrlin worked his way around the base paths after being walked. Shortly after, Michael Kelly would come home for the second run of the inning.

Oakes would add one more insurance run in the fifth inning, on a run from Matthew Kuipers scored after being walked.

When the Tornadoes were in the field, Meehl took care of the Hi-Liners batters allowing just two hits and striking out 13 batters in the win.

Valley City will not have wait long for revenge as the two teams will meet up on Thursday night with Oakes hosting the Hi-Liners next time.
