CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The body of a man missing since Monday was recovered April 22 in the Sheyenne River.
Authorities say Dan Buehner was a senior at Valley City State University. The 23-year old had been with two other men, 22-year old Ryan Shaw and 21-year old Hayden Johnson. The three men capsized from a rubber raft and fell into the river on April 21. Shaw and Johnson were rescued by police officers.
Valley City Fire Chief Gary Retterath says Buehner’s body was located beneath the 8th avenue bridge in southwest Valley City about one hour into the search effort on April 22.
Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson described the heroic efforts of Sergeant Cody Thibert, Officer Sean Hagen and what some citizens did to rescue the other men.
Shaw and Johnson were treated and released from Mercy Hospital in Valley City.
Bald Hill Dam Resource Manager Rich Schueneman says water releases were cut back to 50 cubic feet per second out of Bald Hill Dam to reduce the water level to help crews find the body.
Valley City State University President Steven Shirley says “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness to inform you that authoritiesdiscovered the body of VCSU student Dan Buehner in the Sheyenne River. Dan was a senior majoring in business administration and played catcher on the VCSU Baseball Team. He was from Blaine, Minnesota.”
VCSU Athletic Director Jack Denholm says “In light of this week’s tragic death of VCSU student-athlete Dan Buehner, the Valley City State baseball team has canceled its scheduled games this week against University of Winnipeg and against University of Jamestown.”
