CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) In the first elimination game of the day at the North Star/Frontier Conference Baseball tournament Dickinson State defeated Valley City State 8-2.

Mike Gershman started the game on the hill for the Vikings, but would only get through two innings due to the aggressive hitting by Dickinson State. The Blue Hawks got to Gershman often in the first two innings posting five runs on six hits and an error.

The Vikings only response came in the top of the third. Kayl Hamre and Jared Meiklejohn opened the innings with back to back walks. Then, Jake Rambow loaded the bases with a single to center field. A short time later, Brady Anderson would drive in Hamre and Meiklejohn on a line drive to the outfield.

With Jamie Villarreal on the mound, in relief of Gershman, the Vikings defense showed new life keeping the Blue Hawks off the board again until the eighth. In that inning, The Blue Hawks would shut the door on a Vikings comeback when Jordan Tescher and Chris Mjelstad drove in three RBI’s.

Brendan Hardaway earned the win for Dickinson State pitching a complete game while allowing just five hits and two runs.

The loss ends the Vikings season at 19-29 overall for the year.

In the final game of the night, Mayville state defeated Dickinson State 8-1 in the semifinals. The Comets will meet up with the University of Jamestown on Monday, May 5th, at 1pm in the Championship. That game can be heard on 103.1 The Raven starting at 1pm.
