N.D. (AP) – Residents of Napoleon are trying to figure out what to do about a high water table caused by heavy rains and a rising lake near the town.

The excess water has led to chronic basement flooding around town. Mayor Kyle Haas stated that more than 75 homes are now running sump pumps. He says there’s so much water being pumped out of homes that it “just sits along the curb.”

Resident Chris Sperle says water squishes up from the ground when he steps on his sidewalk and comes out of a crack in his driveway.

Napoleon has invested $3.2 million in a drainage system beneath city streets but problems persist. A public meeting is scheduled Monday to discuss the problem.

Napoleon is in southeastern North Dakota.
