(NewsDakota.com) The landfill site that is used by the City of Oakes has reached full capacity, cannot currently accept any more inert waste, and will be closed until June.

Inert waste is waste which is neither chemically or biologically reactive and will not decompose such as construction materials. Household garbage is still being accepted.

Meanwhile, finding a new landfill site has been challenging for the city’s government. Oakes Mayor Monty Zimmer says officials have been looking for a solution for the better part of two years, and so far, it’s been an exercise in futility.

Public Works Director and City Supervisor Pat Nelson notes a significant amount of red tape interferes with the logistics of implementing a new landfill.

The City is advising those needing to dispose of inert waste to do so at a neighboring landfill such as Ellendale or Gwinner.

The City’s compost pile will be open on a limited schedule for the remainder of May; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3-7pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.
