N.D. (AP) – The mother of a baby born in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Bismarck says her son is doing well. Mother Alesia Medeiros was waiting in a vehicle while her mother-in-law shopped on May 8. Medeiros started going into labor and asked a woman nearby to call 911.

Store co-manager Derrick Orr helped deliver the baby, with the help of others who came to the aid of Medeiros and the woman on the phone with 911 dispatchers, who passed along instructions. Orr used his shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord as the ambulance arrived.

Baby Diesel was born six weeks early and weighed fewer than 5 pounds, but Medeiros says he is doing fine, though he remains in the hospital.
