D.C. (NewsDakota.com) U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a member of the Congressional General Aviation Caucus says a federal grant of  6,937 will be used to acquire a new aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle for the Jamestown Airport.

Heitkamp also played a leadership role in securing Essential Air Service support for Jamestown. Jet service will begin in Jamestown as a result of her efforts on June 5th.

In January, Heitkamp hosted top officials at the Department of Transportation (DOT) to reiterate the importance of the Essential Air Service Program for North Dakota. The DOT agreed to Heitkamp’s request for an expedited transition to new service.

Heitkamp pressed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to make needed investments to North Dakota’s airport infrastructure. Last month, Heitkamp and Senator John Hoeven brought FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to North Dakota to see the aviation challenges facing the western part of the state.

Heitkamp also played a key role in securing more than $17.5 million in grants through the federally funded Airport Improvement Program to North Dakota airports, including $6.5 million to construct a new terminal at Minot International Airport.

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee says “We continue working hard to improve infrastructure across North Dakota, and especially our state’s airports,” He added, “This DOT grant reflects a continued positive direction in our efforts to bolster our state’s airports so they can meet the needs of the many individuals who rely on them for travel and business.”

Earlier this month Hoeven announced seven additional DOT grants that have been awarded to improve North Dakota airports. Besides the Jamestown Airport grant announced on May 30 here is a list of other DOT grants and how they will be allocated in the state.

Minot International Airport – $8,967,973 million to construct a taxiway, Grand Forks International Airport – $4,416,407 million to reconstruct a taxiway and Devils Lake Regional Airport – $1,212,729 million to acquire an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle and to construct a runway safety area.
