(NewsDakota.com) Oakes city officials say the plan for a new landfill is now in a indefinite hold.

Oakes Mayor Monty Zimmer and City Supervisor Pat Nelson cite various issues in regards to finding a new location for the city’s landfill, including land owners who can make more of a profit on their land rather than selling it to the city for landfill use, and state Department of Health regulations such as the inability to build in a floodplain.

Nelson notes for the average resident who simply throws trash away in the bins provided by the city, there will be little to no change. Inert waste, such as mattresses, siding and furniture, in addition to disposal of trees and branches has been regulated according to the time of the week those articles can be disposed, and will continue to be regulated.

Nelson says cities such as Carrington and Edgeley have implemented a similar strategy for some time when it comes to inert waste materials, and results have been successful.
