N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A missile alert facility established in the 1960’s stands as only one of two sites available out of 150 missile silos created in the state that remain open to the public to view.

Oscar Zero was established in the 1960’s as part of the 321st Strategic Missile Wing out of Grand Forks Air Force. According to Guinn Hinmin, the Site Supervisor, stated that the 321st stretched over 7,500 miles in Eastern North Dakota when it was established. The site, now called the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site, was shut down with all its missiles removed in the 1990’s.

The site was then preserved by the State Historical Society of North Dakota as a big piece of North Dakota History. Hinmin stated that the site was important to North Dakota and still is when considering the Cold War.

The site is composed of Oscar Zero, which is only one part of the entire site. November 33 was known as the launch facility and is adjacent to Oscar Zero. The site remains one of two sites in North Dakota that are available to view and tour in the state.
