N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp has announced that Pembina Water Resource Distrct will receive $294,000 to complete ongoing work at the Renwick Dam on the Tongue River.

The Renwick Dam provides flood protection to Cavalier and other downstream communities. Originally built in the 1950’s was recently designated as a “high hazard dam” and improvements are being made to provide continued flood protection for the region.

The 2014 Farm Bill increased annual investments in watershed rehabilitation nearly 21 fold. Funding of the Pembina Water District of Agriculture’s release of $262 million for dam rehabilitation in 26 states. Watershed management projects provide an estimated $2.2 billion in annual benefits for reduced flooding and erosion damages and wildlife habitat for roughly 47 million Americans.
