N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Post 60 started fast, survived a big 1st inning from Beulah, and finished strong on Wednesday. Valley City, the fourth seed from the East Region, defeated Beulah, the top-seed from the West, 10-8 in the opening round of the State Class A Legion Baseball Tournament in Wahpeton.
 
Post 60 started fast with three runs in the top of the 1st inning. Jacob Miller singled in a run, and Jesse Johnson added a two-run, two-out single to make it 3-0. Beulah responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame off Valley City left-hander Austin Berg. Six of the runs scored with two out. Berg would settle down however, and Post 60 came back.
 
Valley City cut the deficit to 7-5 with a pair of runs in the 4th. Mayson Olsen singled in a run, and a throwing error plated another. Post 60 took the lead in the 5th, scoring three times. Chase Carpenter led off with a solo homer, Spencer Meyer singled in a run, and an error scored another. Beulah committed three errors in the 5th.
 
Beulah tied it in the bottom of the 6th. Alec Battest walked, went to second on a groundout, advanced to third base on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch by Carpenter. Post 60 took the lead back in the top of the 7th. Olsen led off with a single, and went to third on a single from Dalton Ondracek. After Ondracek stole second, Austin Meyer singled both runners in to give Valley City a 10-8 lead. Carpenter retired Beulah in order to seal the victory. Carpenter was the winning pitcher in relief. He surrendered one run, one hit, walking three and striking out four. Mikey Morris took the loss in relief for Beulah. Post 60 had 11 hits, with Olsen, Johnson, and Austin Meyer leading the attack with two hits each. Landon Battest and Hayden Norton recorded two hits each for Beulah.
 
Valley City (5-15) faces Watford City at 5:00 on Thursday in Wahpeton. Watford City beat Grafton 10-6 in the opening round. You can hear that game on AM 1490 KOVC and newsdakota.com. Beulah (20-21) meets Grafton in an elimination game Thursday at 11:00 AM.
