N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Post 60 continued to roll in the North Dakota State Class A American Legion Baseball Tournament with a 7-4 victory over Watford City at John Randell Field in Wahpeton.

After defeating Buelah on Wednesday morning, the victory over Watford marks the first time this season that Valley has won back-to-back games. The win lifts Post 60 to 6-15 on the season.

VC wasted no time getting runners on board. The leadoff hitter, Dalton Ondracek, opened up the game with a single to center field. It did not take him long to showcase his speed as he stole second base just a few pitches later. On a high throw from Watford catcher Mitchell Liegel, Ondracek moved into scoring position at third base with no outs. Moments later, Austin Meyer was walked and made his way to first base. Meyer then proceeded to steal second base and when the throw was made across the field, the speedy runner on third made his way home for the first run of the game.

Meyer would later come around to score in the inning when Watford City’s pitcher Dakota Neether threw a low pitch that Liebel could not handle. Another wild pitch, and RBIs from Chase Carpenter and Spencer Meyer, would put Valley up 5-0 after just half an inning of play.

The fourth stanza would be another successful inning for Valley City as the posted two more runs on RBIs from Jacob Miller and Carpenter. This time VC’s runs would not go unanswered. In the home half of the inning, Watford City would break up Jesse Johnson’s perfect game when Neether sent a screamer down the left field line. Later in the inning, Andrew Sampsel would score a double that plated both Neether and Brandon Allex.

Watford would score one run each in both the  fifth and the seventh. Neether was handed the loss after pitching four innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits. He struck out seven batters in the game.

Johnson picked up the win on the mound keeping Watford in check through all seven innings allowing just four runs on seven hits, while fanning seven batters.

Valley City returns to play on Friday night at 7pm against Wahpeton. That game can be heard on the Ingstad Media Network starting 10 minutes before the first pitch.
