CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City School board unanimously approved of reinstating some positions cut by the school district earlier this year.

Superintendent Dean Koppelman says with a projected interim fund rising from 10 to an estimated 13 percent he recommended the board reinstate the full-time elementary art teaching position, a library aide, an ILC aide and return an Elementary counselor contract to 100 percent.

Koppelman says the district will soon advertise to fill these positions. He says former art teacher Lindsey Yanish will not return being she accepted a position with the West Fargo School district.

Koppelman says budget projections are tough to predict in April when it’s based on the best numbers available at that time. He says it was the first time during his 16 year tenure as superintendent that he and the board were faced with making staff reductions.

School board member Mike Callahan says it’s nice to have the opportunity to fill these positions once again to enhance the education of our students in the district.

School board member Rick Ross voted to reinstate the positions but he had hoped the interim fund would be higher than the projected 13 percent to give the district a slightly bigger financial cushion.

Valley City School District business manager Linda Heit says the school the district brought in $12,603,019 into the general fund during 2013-2014 school year. She says there were $12, 132,378 in expenses. The school district had a balance of $780,110 on 6/30/13. Currently the district has a balance of $1,250,751 as of 6/30/14 according to Heit.

She says the projected general fund revenue for the 2014-2015 school year is at $12,171,346 with estimated expenses of $11,720,011. Heit says the projected general fund balance is estimated to rise to $1,702,086. Heit says the projected budget does not include title dollars.

Meanwhile former school board member Dick Nelson was honored for his 24 years of service on the board and Ryan Mathias was sworn in as a new school board member replacing Nelson who decided not to run for another term serving the rural area of the school district.
