N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Post 60 tasted defeat for the first time in the North Dakota Class A American Legion Baseball  Tournament on Friday night. Serving up the five inning 10-0 loss was the host team, Wahpeton Post 20.

Despite the loss, Valley City lives to fight another day. On Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm, they will play Velva for a chance to move on to the State Championship on Sunday. Wahpeton now stands alone as the tournaments only undefeated team. They will play Beulah Saturday at 5pm.

Wahpeton used patience to get to Valley City pitcher Chase Carpenter. Through just 3 1/3 innings, Post 20 forced VC’s starter to throw over 100 pitches. They would blast 10 hits in the game scoring runs on nearly all of them.

The host team got to Carpenter early posting three runs in the opening frame. After a walk and a stolen base from Seth Meide, Kameron McNary would drive in the Wahpeton shortstop with a single to left field. On the next at bat, McNary would come around to score along with Tyler Gripentrog on a Nate Albrecht single up the middle.

Valley City struggled to get any offense going against Wahpeton starter Clay Bassingthwaite. The left handed hurler struck out six batters and allowed just two hits in the complete game win.

Along with the solid pitching, the home team continued to plate runs scoring four in the third and three in the fourth, ending the game shy of a full seven innings.

Albrecht led the way for Post 20 at the plate going 3-3 driving in four RBIs and scoring one run.  McNary was also a perfect 3-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Jacob Miller and Ben Baasch were the only Valley City players to score hits in the game.

Other Class A scores on the day saw Beulah claim a 4-1 victory over Casselton in the opening elimination game, and Velva over Watford City 15-2.

Valley City’s next game against Velva can be heard on Saturday on 1490 KOVC starting at 1:50pm.
