N.D. (NewsDakota.com) For the Valley City Legion baseball team in the Class A state semifinals, the four horsemen went by the names Brad Dean, Isaac Effertz, Eli Luna and Drew Effertz. Velvas mighty foursome combined for 12 runs,12 RBIs and 16 hits in a 15-1 five inning victory.

Valley City ended the season 6-17 overall. They held a mark of 3-4 in the postseason.

Velva entered Saturday’s game having outscored their opponents 29-5 in three games. They would continue to add to that total in the first inning against Valley. Dean put the first run on the board on an RBI Single from Eli Luna.  On the next at bat, Drew Effertz would score his first of five RBIs with a shot to right center field. He would then come around to score, beating out a low throw to the plate by Valley City’s Chase Carpenter. Brady Engebretson was the fourth and final run of the inning on Dixon Bauer infield single.

On the mound, Engebretson kept Post 60 at bay striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits and one run in the five inning affair.

The second stanza would see Velva score three more runs on a 2 RBI single from Effert and a wild pitch that plated Dean. Valley’s lone run in the game came in the bottom of the frame. Ben Baasch got on base with a one out triple. On the next at bat, Jesse Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right field that gave the speedy Post 60 base runner the opportunity to come home.

Velva Continued their dominance at the plate scoring four runs each in the third and fourth inning before ending the game after five innings.

Post 60 starter, Austin Meyer, was given the loss after 2 1/3 innings. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits.

With the loss, Valley City’s season comes to an end. Velva will move on the tomorrow’s championship game. They will meet up with Wahpeton who was the 8-2 winner over Beulah. The two teams met in the first round of play, with Wahpeton defeating Velva 2-1 in a pitchers’ dual.
