N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Foster County recently approved to not accept the two unsigned absentee ballots during the June 2014 primary for the county.

On August 4th, a Recount board met to recount the ballots from the election. According to Foster County State’s Attorney Paul Murphy, the board followed the instructions from the Secretary of State in order to recount the ballots.

“We opened the ballot boxes, broke the seal and counted the ballots right there at the meeting.” Murphy stated.

According to Murphy, the recount board came up with 1151 total votes. The Secretary of State’s report stated that the ballots should come up totaling 1451, leaving the recount board 300 votes short of that count. Murphy pointed out that the totals were not including the votes that were approved as invalid in July.

“At this point, we’re not sure how we are short so many votes. Being short so many votes in the recount can make it so everyone that was a candidate for anything in the Foster County Election can justifiably challenge the results of the entire election.” Murphy stated.

The Recount Board Consisted Foster County State’s Attorney Paul Murphy, Recorder Lynelle Hoppe, George Topp, Auditor Teresa Risovi and Assitant Auditor Heather Martin.
