CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Torrential rain in Cass, Barnes, Ransom and Stutsman counties created flash flooding problems for the cities of Jamestown, Valley City, Lisbon and many other surrounding communities on September 4.

Severe thunderstorms struck the area around 1:35am. A tornado warning was issued for Barnes County around 3:30am north of Litchville or just southwest of Valley City.

Carrington reported quarter size hail or slightly larger along with a wind gust of 65 mph west of the city early this morning. Rainfall amount report was about 1.50 inches.

The rainfall gauge at the broadcast center in downtown Valley City indicated about 1.55 inches of rainfall. A Valley City resident north of Jefferson elementary school reported 2.50 inches another resident south of the Hi Line bridge reported 2.25 inches of rain. A mile south of Valley City another rain gauge reported 3.0 inches of rain.

A caller from the Fingal area reported 3.80 inches of rain another reported 2.25 inches near Fingal. Baldhill dam received about .63 of rainfall.

Bismarck National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Ayd says the Jamestown airport received about 1.22 inches but further south near Ypsilanti about 2 inches fell in about a 90 minute period.

Official rainfall amounts are still not available but about 2 to 4 inches of rain fell in a narrow band of south central and southeastern North Dakota along the Interstate 94 corridor.
